ATTERBURY, PAUL CORNISH WARE & DOMESTIC POTTERY: NE OVER 250 COLOR, MANY 8 3/4 " X 9", 84 PGS
One of the most enduring images of 20th century domestic life in Britain must be a kitchen filled with blue-banded Cornish Ware. Generations have grown up with this familiar striped pottery, as quitessentially English as cricket and Agatha Christie. It is this familiarity, combined with a traditional taste for blue and white, that has made Cornish Ware so eminently collectible today, despite the hundreds of thousands of pieces produced since the 1920s, and despite the fact that it is still in production.

Despite it's popularity, Cornish Ware was only a small part of T.G. Green's production, and the huge variety of tablewares and other domestic pottery made since the 1860s are increasingly of interest to collectors. When this book was first published in 1996, it concentrated exclusively on Cornish Ware. This new and expanded edition documents and illustrates many other T.G. Green wares, along with much more Cornish Ware.

BACON, DENNIS A MECHANICAL HISTORY OF THE UNIVE 30 COLOR AND B&W, 24 7 1/2 " X 10", 176 P
Astronomy is the oldest science. It arose out of the needs of calendar making, time keeping, direction finding and navigation. The early Babylonian and Greek astronomers constructed mathematical concepts and models that allowed them to apply the regularities or celestial movements of these important social requirements. All ancient cultures asked the question "What is the structure of the universe?" However, it was only the Greeks who really sought an answer to this question based on the regularities of cosmic phenomena. The Greek astronomers tried to picture how the Earth, Sun, Moon and planets were arranged in space. There is evidence that not long after they constructed conceptual models of the universe, Greek astronomers also started attempts to model the concepts in mechanical terms. Efforts to construct mechanical models of the solar system have continued ever since. These resulting models form a mechanical record of our changing views of the solar system and a record of telescopic discoveries of new planets and satellites of planets, both old and new.

The purpose of this book is to show how changes in our thinking about the solar system have been reflected in mechanical devices from antiquity to the twentieth century. Also covered are the discoveries about our solar system and how these have been incorporated into such mechanical instruments.

Subtitled "A Collector's Handbook", this book, written by two of the World's foremost experts in the field of percussion tool technology, succeeds in its avowed task of making sense of an implement that ranges from the simplicity of a stone on the end of a stick to the complexity of patented special purpose hammer that only an inventor's mother could love. Divided into two distinct sections, the book begins with a pictorial analysis of hammers of every sort, and includes photographs of mallets, double claw hammers, stoneworking hammers, tack hammers and many, many, more. The second section, and the one that will prove most worthwhile to collectors and dealers, features an index of all known hammer patents together with the original patent drawings as submitted to the U.S. Patent Office. Included are patents for hammers for the one-armed man, nail holding hammers, double claw hammers, combination tools of every sort (including a hammer/wrench combination that is an insult to the integrity of each of its components) and much more. If you have an interest in tools, "The Hammer" will open the Door of Discovery to an interesting and infinitely variable world. An essential reference.
