A CENTURY OF THAI CINEMA: OVER 5,500 COLOR 11 " X 15", 152 PGS.
The birth of cinema was in 1895. Just two years later it had reached Siam where it quickly became popular. Thais began shooting their own films in 1900 and managed to establish an indigenous film industry, whose "golden age" was the 1930s before the outbreak of the Second World War. In the post-war era, cinema remained the most popular public entertainment, despite competition from television. Some 700 cinemas weree built throughout the country, as well as the many open-air screenings during teemple fairs and other popular events. This is the first book to provide both a history of Thai cinema and a visual record of all the associated memorabilia, particularly the highly collectible movie posters. |

70S VERSUS 80S: 120 COLOR, 20 B&W 9 " X 10 1/2", 176 P
Strangely, the 70s and 80s now belong to the past; by now even the 80s are far enough away that we can recognize them as complete (and finished) decades, each with its own interesting aesthetic. This book highlights the aesthetic break between the two decades, examining the dominant attitudes of each period. By focusing on some of the radical furniture designs by artists such Luigi Colani or Ettore Sottsass, but also on objects of glass, pottery and and fabrics, the shapes of which are typical of the two decades, a definition of the aesthetics of each period is attempted. It becomes clear that around the year 1980, a paradigmatic change took place on a broad front, a re-evaluation that emphasized multiplicity instead of unity, image instead of function, witty or even aggressive messages instead of good-natured self-reference. In short, that something happened in 1980 which can be read as the definitive end of Modernism and the final arrival of Post-Modernism.

FELT: ARTS, CRAFTS AND DESIGN 170 COLOR AND B&W 6 1/4 " X 6 1/2", 28
Felt is fashionable. Since the 1980's, not only couturiers and designers, but artists as well have again become more interested in felt. The present publication for the first time provides a thrilling survey of current creative activities which may be based equally on Joseph Beuys as on ethnological traditions. It is felt as a medium, or frequently the felting process itself, what dominates the artistic message of many works. Artists like Inge Evers or Claudia Merx, for instance, develop their images directly from felting techniques. Others may be more interested in the sculptural potential of felt or explore its material characteristics like Erich Köster, who turns felt into a stiff material, from which he saws 'technoid' structures, or Ulrike Hau, who makes weapon-shaped felt objects. There are also artists who are attracted by felt's resemblance to skin and thus its connectedness with the body, for example Célio Braga, who considers the body in terms of its vulnerability and frailty. Together with such artistic interpretations, the book illustrates to use of felt in fashion and design.
A comprehensive survey of what artists make of felt at the beginning of the 21st century, recorded in captivating illustrations accompanied by texts illuminating the fascination of felt and its significance in contemporary art and design. Hardback slipcase made out of felt |

In a world with the supermarket up the road, where running water and central heating are accepted as commonplace, it is hard to imagine how households were run in the days before these things existed. CLARE THROUGH THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: P 75 COLOR, 68 B&W 9 1/2 " X 11", 272 P
This prestigious new volume celebrates the events and people that have left their individual mark on the life of Clare College over the past 100 years, and that, collectively, have shaped the identity, character and achievements of this unique institution. Several accounts of aspects of the College history already exist, from Mansfield Forbes' eccentric six-century survey up to 1926 and Richard Eden's Clare College and the Founding of Clare Hall, but nowhere is there a wide-ranging overview of College life and learning through the last century. Nor has any one book attempted to capture the beauty of the College through historical and contemporary illustrations and photographs. Clare through the Twentieth Century achieves all of this and much more. Over thirty individual essays and published extracts and over 140 illustrations - half in color - combine personal recollection, with thoughtful appraisal and colorful prose that ranges from the serious to the plain irreverent. Together they reflect the changes of the last century and look forward to the challenges of the twenty-first. |

ANTIQUE GLASS BOTTLES: THEIR HISTO 368 COLOR, 26 B&W 9 1/4 " X 10 3/4", 3
This is the first major comprehensive book on the history and evolution of antique glass bottles between 1500 and 1850. Lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned color photography, it includes probably the most comprehensive bibliography on glass bottles ever produced. Whilst the collecting of antique drinking glasses is very popular throughout Europe, the collecting of utility bottles (1500-1850) has, in contrast, been very much neglected on the Continent in spite of their wide variety of artistic shapes and colours. This book has been written for all collectors, archaeologists, museums, libraries, historians, writers, researchers. institutions, bottle makers, wine and beer enthusiasts, pharmacists and anyone interested in the collecting of antiques and the social history they reflect. To render this book as comprehensive as possible, the selection of bottles has been carefully chosen from private collections. Only three examples from museums are illustrated which perhaps underlines the lack of interest in bottles shown by museums in the past. |

JEWELS OF THE NIZAMS: 300 COLOR AND B&W 9 3/4 " X 12 1/2", 2
This is the story of the incalculable wealth of the Asaf Jah dynasty. Wealth that has lain concealed in the darkness of a bank vault for over 50 years. It is the study and documentation of gemstones and jewels that few people have had the opportunity to see and handle. The collection of jewels of the nizams of Hyderabad is one of the finest in the world. In addition to turban ornaments, gem-set and enamelled necklaces, earrings, armbands, bracelets, belts and other items of jewelry, it includes twenty-two unset emeralds and the fables 184.50 carat Jacob Diamond - a magnificent South African gem believed to heave been used by the last Nizam as a paperweight. After the integration of Hyderabad in the Union of India in 1950, Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan instituted a jewelry trust to which he assigned the most important items from the Hyderabad treasury, with the stipulation that they could be sold only after his death. In the nearly three decades since 1972 (when the collection was first offered to the government of India), the unfolding drama of the Nizam's jewels entailed court cases, tantrums, intrigue, conflicting decisions and colossal expenses. The Jewels of the Nizams documents this unique group of jewels that give credence to legends, apocryphal tales and fading memories of a fabulously wealthy dynasty that ruled the Deccan for seven generations. |
