ANTIQUITIES TO IMPRESSIONISM: THE W 80 COLOR 8 1/2 " X 11 3/4", 1
The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is one of the oldest art museums in the United States and was the first in the nation's capital. In 1925 William A. Clark donated more than 800 objects from his private collection, spanning centuries of creativity from Ancient Greece to French Impressionism. He had earned his fortune in the copper industry, and amassed his huge art collection in retirement. This book is published to coincide with an exhibition celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of Clark's rich and varied bequest.

Paintings and sculpture by artists such as van Goyen, Gainsborough, Chardin, Corot, Delacroix, Rodin, and Degas, feature alongside rare Greek terracottas, antique lace, Indo-European rugs, Italian Renaissance maiolica, and the Salon Doré, a gilded French eighteenth-century room permanently installed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Dare Myers Hartwell looks at Clark's life in relation to other philanthropists of his time, while Laura Coyle documents the reception of Clark's grand gift in the 1920s.

Laura Coyle is co-Curator of the Clark Anniversary Exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She recently organized the successful exhibition At the Edge, featuring the work of Portuguese modernist Amadeo de Souza.

Dare Myers Hartwell is Conservator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and co-Curator of the Clark Anniversary Exhibition. She is the author of a book on the restoration of the famous Salon Doré.

ARNOLD ODERMATT: MEINE WELT: PHOTOGRA 26 COLOR, 114 DUOTON 12 " X 12 1/2", 164
Text in English and German

Arnold Odermatt was a photographing policeman from Nidwalden, Switzerland; it was a novelty when he used a camera to document traffic accidents. When in uniform, he was an untiring writer of protocols, dogmatic and known as an old fusspot. In plainclothes, he was an alert chronicler, social anthropologist and documenter whose pictures represented the photographer's world with moral commitment and irony.

Odermatt's photographic creed was incorruptibility and authenticity. His pictures are a clear-sighted chronicle of unfolding events, without any retouching or glorification of the facts.

The book contains 140 of Arnold Odermatt's best photographs selected by his son, Urs Odermatt.

COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE: CARNIVAL OF COMEDY P 435 COLOR 9 1/2 " X 11 1/2", 3
Two Supplements: English translation (88 pages) and 88 model engravings of subjects. In a specially designed slipcase

From the 16th century until well into the 18th century, the commedia dell'arte, a type of popular comic theatricals in Italy, cast its spell on a large and diverse audience. Here an exuberant joy of living was reflected in a portrayal of all aspects of life exaggerated with pomposity and humor.

No medium was better suited than preecious porcelain to immortalize the vivacious performance of the comedians on the stage. No other subject produced a similar symbiotic relationship between the downright expressionist sculptures executed by the porcelain modelers and the brilliant colors used by the porcelain painters in their astounding depictions of the costumes.

This publication, marking the 50th anniversary of the Gesellschaft der Keramikfreunde e.V., is the first comprehensive survey of the commedia dell'arte as a subject of the ceramic arts. Almost 400 objects from more than 45 European manufacturers cover the period from the 18th to the 20th century. Commedia dell'arte figurines were every workshop's most highly prized items.
