A DOVETAILED GUNMETAL MITRE PLANE as produced by Modern Master Planemaker Robert Baker of Mattawan, Michigan. This uncommon early creation from Bob Baker has ebony infill and it retains its original "snecked" cutting iron. The cap is signed "Robt. Baker" together with the date of its completion, "1980". It is marked on the iron dovetail on the side of the plane with the assembly number, "XIV" in Roman numerals. A classic example of the early work of an extremely talented craftsman who died far too young.

A rare BLIND NAILING CHISEL GAUGE, No. 96, by STANLEY. The side of this early and uncommon Stanley offering is marked with the STANLEY name in large block letters. These tools were designed to accommodate a narrow chisel, which could then be used to lift a sliver of wood. A nail could then be set in the groove and the wood sliver glued back invisibly into place. The device was patented on April 10, 1888 by Charles L. Mead of New York City and assigned to the Stanley Rule & Level Company. These tools appear not to have been particularly popular. Examples are quite scarce. This one is in excellent collector quality condition. A 1/4" width chisel is included with the gauge.

The ORIGINAL MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY BOUND CORRESPONDENCE OF MERCHANT AND PLANING MILL OWNER CHAUNCEY OLMSTEAD OF LEROY, NEW YORK. This interesting book includes copies of letters sent by Olmstead between the years 1856 and 1857 on 225 onionskin pages. The book measures 11 1/2" tall x 9 1/2" wide x 3/4" thick an has calf-backed marbled boards. The book is complete and intact. Some of the letters have faded, but most are clear and legible. Olmsted & Bro. operated in Le Roy, New York, as general merchants, dealers in lumber, and operators of a planing mill. The principal was Chauncey Lorenzo Olmsted (1817-1872), and the brother most likely was William Delos Olmsted. A sample of a business letter: "Le Roy April 15, 1856. Mssrs. Ford & Bemus. Gent . Please write us if you have pine lath on hand and if convenient to ship by R Road should we want one or two car loads in a few days and at what price. Yours respectfully, Olmsted & Bro. Some other recipients of their correspondence include; Elijah Gray, B.W. Stevens & Co., A.G. Bassett, John A. Winsted, James More, Hix & Hathaway of Boston, and several dozen more. Chauncey L. Olmsted was born in 1817 of Stephen and Barbara (Parmalee) Olmsted. A prominent builder; he erected the Oriental mills of Chicago, and the Orchard City mills, of Burlington, Iowa. His lumber interests caused him to spend much time in the Saginaw Valley. He was also a banker at Burlington, and president of the Orchard City Savings Bank, from June, 1868, to 1872, when he sold out on account of ill health. His son Henry B. was cashier, and died in 1872, and the father died the same year. Olmsted also built the Red flouring mills of Le Roy, and the Batavia and Le Roy planing mills. A rare and exceptionally well preserved example of the REVELATEUR "SCHUMFELL" PLUMB BOB by Schumfell, France. This electromagnetic field detection device is fitted with a magnetic compass and designed to function as a plumb bob. It was used in searching for deposits of gold and other metallic deposits. It is marked with the designation, "Brevete", meaning that it was issued a French Patent. This example is in unused condition in it's original faux alligator covered box. A LIMITED EDITION "CROWNING" PLANE, No. CT-9, part of a limited edition produced by the Bridge City Tool Company, Portland, Oregon. This spectacular tool is fashioned from bronze and rosewood and has a concave cutter sole. Serial numbered as part of a Limited Edition of less than one thousand, this tool was part of the "CT" tool series produced by Bridge City each year with the promise that the tools produced in that series "...were never to be made again." A spectacular tool of consummate quality from the preeminent manufacturer of precision hand tools of exceptional quality of the last fifty years. This example is in absolutely perfect condition in its original walnut presentation box with full, original documentation. It has been factory engraved with the intials "TPD".

The ORIGINAL SADDLER AND HARNESS MAKER'S LEDGER maintained by George Hart of Moravia, New York between the years 1843 and 1853. Hart was a Cayuga County, New York resident saddler who also worked for the town on the side. He also served the town in various roles including highway commissioner attended town meetings, furnished reports, kept track of the books, etc. Records indicate however, that George Hart was primarily involved in the leather trade in the town of Moravia for many years (he is listed as a harness maker and saddler in both the 1850 and 1855 census). He made and sold mostly saddles, bridles, and other equestrian items, including fitting out carriages. Entries include binding buggy dashes, capping collars, covering bits, covering buggy dashes, covering whip box aprons, fixing mud wagons, installing mug wagon tops, making bridle reins and bits, making bridle rosettes, repairing buggy harnesses, repairing saddles, seaming bellows leather, splicing lazar straps, splicing lines, stuffing saddles, trimming carriagc harnesses, varnishing trunks, washing and oiling harnesses, etc. Also many purchases for materials used in his work including horse leather, sheep skin, hog skin, and oils. Other entries relate to compiler's duties serving the town in various capacities. This handwritten book is also a treasure trove of local genealogy as numerous customers names appear throughout including L.O. Allen, W. W. Allen, Oliver Andrews, Benjamin Arnold, Alanson Barber, Joel Bartlett, William Bartlit, Edmund Benjamin, T. & J. Keeler, the Town of Moravia and many more. The book is bound in calfskin with marbled boards and shows light wear overall, except to the upper spine, where a three-inch piece of leather binding is missing. An interesting look at the dynamic leather trade in a small, Upstate New York community at the end of the second quarter of the Nineteenth Century.
