The ORIGINAL PERSONAL DIARY compiled by Jacob D. Smith of Stanton, New Jersey between January 1 and Dec 31 1889. This book is actually three small books sewn together. The book measures 6" tall by 4" wide by 1" thick. Smith listed his occupation as "farmer" when he registered for the draft in 1862 and was still a farmer as late as the time of the U.S. Census in 1900. He died in 1903 and is buried in Newell Cemetery in Stanton, New Jersey. The diary entries mention many local names, trips to Stanton and beyond, much writing about the weather and the reading and recitation of prayers, as he was obviously a very religious man. Every page of this book is filled to capacity with the notes and observations made by Smith. Although he was obviously religious, there was nothing religious about his devotion to his diary as a few days will pass between entries, followed by entries for many consecutive days and so on. An interesting look at the day to day life of a farmer in rural New Jersey near the end of the Nineteenth Century. | |
