The ORIGINAL SHOEMAKING, CIDER MILL AND CARPENTRY LEDGER maintained by the Houghton Family of Sterling, Massachusetts between the years 1790 and 1810. This leather bound book of approximately 180 pages is written in brown ink in clear longhand. The back cover is missing, but this book, which measures 12" in height by 8" in width, is otherwise in excellent condition. The early entries pertain almost exclusively to the cider mill operated by the Houghtons. The making of shoes is a periodic entry as aare other tasks such as building of a sleigh, making 22,000 shingles, drawing timber, framing and chopping. The book lists many accounts kept with local persons including James Sever, Samuel Brooks, Samuel Thurston, Amos Sawyer, the Town of Sterling, Aaron Stow, Calvin Peabody, Ebenezer Neff, Tilley Houghton, Ebenezer Fitch and many more. An interesting look at the life of an American family enterprise in the last quarter of the Eighteenth Century and the first two decades of the Nineteenth Century.
