A PATENT ADJUSTABLE BLOCK PLANE having a brass fixing screw and brass knob by the Meriden Malleable Iron Company, Meriden, Connecticut. This example of the March 10, 1885 U.S. Patent of William Tidgewell of Middletown, Connecticut retains its original cutting iron, which is marked with the Meriden name. The screw lock cap, which is almost invariably broken, has miraculously survived intact. From the Collection of John and Janet Wells, Berkeley, California. In an unprecedented act of generosity, it was the express wish of John and Janet Wells that the proceeds from the sale of their extraordinary collection be divided equally between the Early American Industries Association and the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association.
