Indianapolis Spring International Catalogue Auction
Lot: IC19-241
Maker: the Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts
Length: 15.000 Inches
Condition: FINE
Patent Paper: 125720
Estimate: $350.00 - $750.00
A U.S. ARMY MODEL 1873 TROWEL BAYONET by the Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts, patented April 16, 1872. These bayonets were patented by Felix Chillingworth and Ira Merrill, both of Springfield, Massachusetts. They were designed to be both an entrenching tool and weapon, given that entrenching equipment was generally not carried by soldiers at this time and would need to be brought from the rear at times when it was most needed, but when the movement of supplies was most hazardous. The device, of which only 10,000 were produced, was deemed obsolete by the U.S. Army in 1881. This example is in essentially unused condition in its original leather scabbard with brass U.S. emblem. We will be at the Marriott for two auctions on March 15 and 16, 2019 and two more on October 18 and 19, 2019. See you there!
