An UNUSED TRANSITIONAL PLANE, No. 22, by Stanley. This ca. 1930's plane is in brand new condition in its original pasteboard box. Unlike any Stanley transitional plane that we have sold or seen, or heard of, this plane has a "Handy Feature" groove milled into the body. The August 3, 1897 U.S. Design Patent of prolific Stanley inventor Justus A. Traut had documented what came to be known as the "Handy Feature"--an indent on the side of a block plane to facilitate gripping the plane when in use. The same design was applied to Stanley's levels shortly after the issuance of the patent. This plane was apparently a unique attempt to apply the "Handy Feature" to a wood body transitional plane, although it would have come well after the expiration of the seventeen year period for a U.S. Patent. The plane is absolutely perfect in every way. The box has some writing on the sides, but it is intact and is otherwise in excellent condition with its full paper label. Writing in "Patented and Transitional Planes in America", Volume 2, author Roger K. Smith speculates, in the caption for the photograph of this very plane, that Stanley was using up older boxes and labels, despite the fact that this box is more than ten years older than the plane. A pristine and very likely unique Stanley plane in new condition in its original box. Highly Recommended. From the Collection of the late Phil Whitby, Kingston, New Hampshire.
