Nashua Fall International Catalogue Antique Tool Auction

Lot: FC19-776
Length: 36.000 Inches
Condition: FINE
Estimate: $35000.00 - $75000.00
A SPECTACULAR NINETEENTH CENTURY TOOL CHEST that was built by carpenter and joiner David Shaw of Peabody, Massachusetts. Shaw began building the chest four years before it was completed, in 1878. It is decorated with marquetry work and it retains all of its original tools, nearly all in close to new condition. We believe this to be the finest complete chest of Nineteenth Century joiner's tools to be found outside of a museum. This chest was prominently featured in Roger K. Smith's classic book, "Patented and Transitional Planes in America", Volume 1. Photographs of the chest and information about its maker were included in the chapter, the final sentence of the book, contained in this chapter, reads, "These two pages are dedicated to all the woodworkers of America who ever "shoved" a plane whether it was of the conventional wooden, transitional or metallic variety." We have assembled a portfolio containing photographs of the chest, a detailed list of its contents and historical and genealogical information about David Shaw and his tool chest. It is available for download at https://www.mjdtools.com/The_Tool_Chest_of_David_Shaw.pdf or by clicking HERE. This chest is and will long be regarded as one of the great treasures of American antique tools. Highly recommended. From the Collection of Roger K. Smith, Hubbardston, Massachusetts.
