A CHAPLIN' S PATENT TRANSITIONAL PLANE, No. 73, by Tower & Lyon, New York, New York. This uncommon transitional plane was patented May 7, 1872. It has been marked on the toe with the imprint of the original owner, one "A.T. Straut". Andrew T. Straut was listed as a carpenter, age 40, living in Paterson, New Jersey in the U.S. Census for 1910. In an unprecedented act of generosity, it was the express wish of John and Janet Wells that the proceeds from the sale of their extraordinary collection be divided equally between the Early American Industries Association and the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association.
