A SOLON RUST PATENTED SMOOTHING PLANE by the Meriden Malleable Iron Company, Meriden, Connecticut, patented May 16, 1882. Fully 95% of the original black japan finish remains on this rare adjustable throat plane. The cutting iron is a "B Plane" type and the handle has an early glue repair. From the Collection of John and Janet Wells, Berkeley, California. In an unprecedented act of generosity, it was the express wish of John and Janet Wells that the proceeds from the sale of their extraordinary collection be divided equally between the Early American Industries Association and the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association.
