An extremely rare and very early 18" size "SKELETON" LEVEL by L.L. Davis, Springfield, Massachusetts. These unmarked levels were the very first produced by Davis. Owing to their fragility, very, very few examples have survived. This spectacular example retains 95% of its original black japan finish and 90% of the original gold highlighting. A series of stylized "starburst" decorations highlight this early cooper's adze, which bears the imprint of maker B.R. Mowry. Mowry is listed in the Directory of American Toolmakers as having produced edge tools in Union, Maine between 1820 and 1860. He appears to have specialized in the making of cooper's adzes.
