T oday's photograph shows the front maintenance shop in the warehouse. In October of 2008, Martin decided that it should be painted in bright, primary colors. Guess what happened? The boys complained about "Ronald McDonald colors" as they were painting, but had to admit that it didn't look all that bad when it was done. On Monday we mailed 2,816 cds to those of you who have bid our auctions in the last two years. You should have already received them or will be getting them soon. We have a new feature that allows you to set up a slide show/auto-preview and to regulate the speed at which the pictures play. Hitting the "escape" key during the slide show/auto-preview will stop the slide show. At this point you can click on "bid at mjdtools.com", enter a bid and then resume the slide show. You may also notice that we have increased the screen size of the application. If it is too big for your computer call us and we can help make the application work for you. Today's Featured Tool Description
Chesterman/ Sheffield : Combination Rule & Knife. Fitted Leather Pouch. New Condition. Length: 3.00 Inches. The people at Chesterman apparently did with advertising knives what was done with advertising anvils in this country. And the English may well have won this round. A folding knife is, after all, a thoroughly useful device, especially when combined, as these were, with a precision rule of the highest quality. What happens when you go to visit your friendly neighborhood manufacturer of widgets and the owner says "thanks for your support" and hands you a bronze anvil embossed, in bold letters, with the words '"Acme Widget Works"? Being proper and polite, you say "Thank you", of course. You may well be halfway home before it dawns on you that you now have a thoroughly useless 1 pound anvil in your pocket. I suppose that when you got home you would set it on the windowsill or put it in the shop (where you would hack it up beyond recognition the first time you tried to use it), or whatever. The point is, that every time you saw that anvil, you would get angrier and angrier at that cheap *#!__ at the Acme Works for thrusting this utterly impractical aberration into the sanctity of your private space. No, I'll take the $25.00 knife over the free anvil every day of the week. A good one. (GOOD+). This item was sold on October 29, 1998 for $25.00. jpg_file

jpg_file Lot 657. A rare and important DOUBLE MARKED HALVING MOLDING PLANE. Documenting for the first time, with physical evidence, the direct working relationship between New York City planemaker and dealer Thomas Grant with the English planemaking trade. In addition to the "Thos. Grant" mark, this plane is also marked with the name of prominent Eighteenth Century English maker "I. Cogdell". Cogdell was one of the very first English makers to mass produce planes and an outlet to the then-colonies in America would have provided an economy of scale in production to compete in the English market while supplying American needs as well. The plane has some minor woodworm holes, but is otherwise excellent and marked with both makers' names. (GOOD+).(2,000.00 - 4,000.00) Length: 13.00 Inches.
