C1-2: Hayes, Oren T., Hastings, Minnesota: Patent Bevel and Square.
Patented January 29,1867. Original Patent Model. Length: 12 Inches. We
are especially pleased to be able to offer a small number of patent models in
this Edition. These models all came to us from a single source and we believe
strongly that the opportunity to purchase artifacts of such historical and
technological significance as these is not likely to present itself again soon,
if ever.
Hastings, Minnesota, is situated on the West bank of the upper Mississippi
River just directly South of Minneapolis. The name of Oren T. Hayes, the
patentee of this tool, is to be found nowhere else in the volumes of information
about tools and their makers that line the waIls of this office and provide
extra insulation from Western New York winters. But does it really matter
who Oren F Hayes was? Isn't it enough to know that he was a dreanier, a
thinker, a tinkerer
and a believer that things could be made better? And what of this carefully
constructed bevel square, angle finder and protractor with its perfectly
preserved patent tag? Are these just pieces of mahogany and brass that
document an idea that failed? Are they some fool's folly, a waste of time and
effort? Or maybe, just maybe, are they the timeless, changeless, vestiges of an
idea took flight? Yes, just pieces...pieces of the American Dream. One of a
kind. (FINE) $1295.00
