A1-4: Wilkinson & Co., A.J. Boston, MA, No. 0: Engineer's Brass Plumb Bob.
Decorative Etching. Original Wood Box. Length: 3.25 Inches. "Old
tools? We have a lot of them in the barn", they say. "Of
course they're rusty. The're old, aren't they?" And so it goes.
What makes a great collectible tool? To the folks on the other end of
the foregoing conversation, I patiently and politely explain that the
tools that collectors are looking for are old things, yes; but the sort
of old things they are seeking are old tools that are in new codition.
Moreover, those tools should be things that were made to be something
special when they were new. They should be constructed of fine, even
exotic, materials and have been finished with a degree of detail that
shows they were meant to be something special the day they were made.
"Good luck finding anything like that!", they say, and then
look at me as if I would someday come to regret not having seized
an opportunity to buy "...the old block planes...the BIG ones...
" Sometimes, the search isn't quite so frustrating. Sometimes
one finds a glorious thing such as that offered here. Carefully etched,
knurled and engraved with elaborate ornamentation and boldly marked
with the marker's name, this extra-special plumb bob remains in
new condition in its original wooden box with paper label in
essentially the same condition as the day it was made. Good luck finding
something like this. Magnificent. (FINE) $795.00
