The Workbench Book, by Scott Landis. 248 Pages. Softbound. In this, the first of the Taunton Press "Book" series, Scott Landis began this exciting series that combines the great tools of long ago with modern woodworking in a way that brings contemporary craftsment to an appreciation of the past and antique tool collectors to an understanding of the function and history of the accoutrements of traditional craftsmanship. In a work that set the continuing standard for this superb series, Landis looks at the workbench in every imaginable form, with a special eye toward the historical development of this essential accessory to woodworking. The Workbench Book is filled with superb color and black & white photographs, including many of classic workbenches of the past. Included are plans for making traditional workbenches for the home shop, information on the many uses of the workbench; a survey of the use of workbenches in non-Western cultures and, finally a chapter that sings the praises of the latter day workbench, the Black & Decker Workmate. For a book that looks at its subject in more ways than you could imagine, and does so in an entertaining and informative way, we recommend Scott Landis' excellent book. $24.95 (BK-0049) |
